about

The inspiration for Heart Like Thunder came from a medical experience, and a bathtub. I was very ill, and had fully lost my voice the night before a huge show I was supposed to play the next day. I've never been a huge meditation person, but I intuitively knew I needed to be in water. I sank into the bathtub and listened to my heart beating. I was very depressed at this point, and contemplated what it would be like to let the darkness take over, and choose not to swim, listening to my heart beating. I had a moment of resolve- I thanked every part of my body for what it does for me in the world- thank you arms for holding my loved ones, thank you feet for carrying me through the world. Thank you face for showing people how I feel, thank you eyes for seeing the mountains and sunsets. This was the most out of control I've ever felt, and the most acceptance I've ever felt for my body.

Heart Like Thunder’s verses are both tranquil, and groovy. The multi-meter gives it a movement that feels like a slow dance between the piano and the drums. Then the chorus dramatically drops into a huge space with the strings, synth and baritone sax where we feel the intensity of the lyrics.

lyrics

I am floating further from the shoreline
Breathing slowly trying not to sink
Hearing murmurs of a half-life beneath

Can you hear me babbling in the water?
Spilling secrets like we were friendly
We’re just writing different endings

It’s easier to stay, wash yourself away, better to give in
Watch the colors fade, as you slip away, choosing not to swim

And I look around as I go down
Pressure going deeper to the ground
I can hear the last words that you sound
And my heart like thunder pounds

It’s been ages since we’ve seen the water
Years can flow by, dried up like a stream
Dreaming isn’t what it used to be

It’s easier to stay, wash yourself away, better to give in
Watch the colors fade, as you slip away, choosing not to swim

And I look around as I go down
Pressure going deeper to the ground
I can hear the last words that you sound
And my heart like thunder pounds
Pounds
Pounds
